Director of Environmental Services

Purpose: To maintain the facilty in good condition

Reports to: Executive Director

Direct Reports: Maintenance, Janitorial, Housekeeping and Laundry

Location: York Region, Ontario, Canada (Greater Toronto Area)


Qualifications

The Director of Environmental Services will demonstrate a high degree of trust, respect, accountability, honesty, and commitment and will also possess the following strengths:

  • University/college degree and/or relevant work experience
  • Five to seven years of progressive leadership/management experience, preferably in a health care or hospitality related organization and/or charity
  • Knowledge of building systems and general maintenance principles
  • Facility, budget and capital asset management, including capital projects
  • Strong project management and delivery of concurrent capital projects, particularly multi-element facility/building projects
  • Multi-stakeholder engagement such as: residents, families, building inspectors, fire department, government, and vendors
  • Negotiating with and managing external contractors
  • High-level proficiency in all office-related technology
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience in a fast-paced communal living environment


Major Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the smooth, efficient, cost effective operation of maintenance, custodial, housekeeping and laundry departments including labour management, inventory control and the development of a positive and supportive work environment
  • Develop and maintain a performance improvement program for the facilities, suites and offices, public spaces and related services
  • Oversee and manage all major project implementation
  • Oversight of all service providers and contracts relating to building operations and systems
  • Co-ordinate, in conjunction with Resident Services, the preparation of suites and before residents move in
  • Maintain all records pertaining to fire, inspections, certifications, regulatory logs and codes
  • Provide input to capital planning on major equipment replacement
  • Make recommendations and assist in the coordination of preventative maintenance program
  • Maintain a pest-free building
  • Maintain monthly departmental budgets. Assess opportunities for revenue generation
  • Evaluate individual employee performance, determine areas in need of improvement, establish goals, objectives and training needs required to attain the same
  • Prepare and implement work routines and schedules
  • Promote and apply teamwork skills at all times
  • Be creative when problem-solving difficult situations and interactions
  • Be mindful of maintaining residents’ privacy and dignity
  • Ensure that responsive and efficient cleaning and repair/upgrade services are provided to Residents/families and guests
  • Plan, organize and monitor staff workload to ensure compliance with the cleanliness, maintenance, customer service and financial standards
  • Oversee daily operations of each departmental area to ensure that the highest possible quality standards are consistently maintained, and that service is provided in a highly professional manner

Regular and frequent contact with all staff, residents, family members and service providers


External Contacts

Regular contact with various external organizations including vendors, service providers, provincial and municipal governmental agencies.


Significance of Errors

Errors in judgment could result in destruction of the reputation of the organization.  The efficiency of the organization could be significantly reduced.  This position could also put the company into serious financial difficulty.


Performance Appraisal

Performance will be reviewed three months after hiring, and then at the six (6) month period.  Thereafter, it will be carried out on the anniversary of hiring.

Objectives will be established as part of the annual plan and quality assurance process.  Performance will be judged against targets set for each objective.

Performance review will be carried out by the supervisor.
